DIN EN ISO 14122-4 Safety of machinery – Permanent means of access to machinery – Part 4: Fixed fixed ladders contains specifications and guidelines for the use of fixed ladders:

The distance between the fixed ladder and permanent obstacles must be measured from the front of the rungs,

• in front of the ladder must be at least 650 mm, if a pipe or duct crosses 600 mm
• behind the ladder must be at least 200 mm, if a pipe or duct crosses 150 mm
• For fixed ladder systems larger than 3,000 mm and smaller than 10,000 mm, the individual runs of staggered ladder runs may be a maximum of 6,000 mm in length, and a maximum of 10,000 mm for individual ladder runs.
• For fixed ladder systems larger than 10,000 mm, lengths of max. 6,000 mm must be observed for staggered ladder runs; a climbing protection system must be provided for individual ladder runs
• From a fall height of 3,000 mm, fall protection must be provided, e.g. in the form of back guards or arrester systems with fixed guides
• the back guard must be installed at least 2,200 mm and a maximum of 3,000 mm from the floor
• if the entry and exit points are not horizontal, solid and straight, platforms must be provided
• the distance between rungs must be 225-300 mm
• the clear width between the ladder rails must be 400 – 600 mm
• Rungs must have a flat tread surface, therefore round rungs are no longer permitted
