GRP – a convincing material

“GRP” stands for glass fiber reinforced plastic. This is a composite material made from plastics and glass fibers. The plastic-polymer matrix is usually formed by polyester, epoxy or vinylester resins. These act as a binder for the glass fibers and give the material its dimensional flexibility in production. At the same time, the resin ensures the GRP’s environmental and chemical resistance. The glass fibers used ensure the material’s dimensional stability and robustness. While GRP was primarily used in the thermal insulation of buildings when it was first discovered at the beginning of the 20th century, it is now used in a wide variety of industries. These include shipbuilding and vehicle construction, aerospace and the manufacture of a wide variety of constructions such as platforms, walkways and shelving structures. The composite of glass fibers and synthetic resin provides the material with enormous stability. While glass fibers are particularly resistant to tension and plastic resins are particularly good at withstanding compressive loads, GRP combines these two properties in a very robust and durable material.
